Mia Klein established her own wine Selene Wines in 1991 after nearly a decade of working in Napa Valley as a consultant. She is a Graduate of the UC Davis and makes her wines using fruit from Larry Hyde’s esteemed Carneros vineyard. She is most likely one of California’s most sought-after winemakers, with clients such as Dalla Valle.

We attended a Selene Winemaker Dinner and had the pleasure of sitting at her table. I engaged her in a conversation comparing New Zealand Sauvingon Blancs and those grown in Mia’s area of Napa Valley. I got quite an education on viticulture !

Mia offered her Selene Merlot 2000 Napa Valley. In the glass it was dark and rich . On the nose hints of raspberry, blackberry , chocolate and tobacco came through and integrated well. The nose was confirmed on the palate with the blackberry, raspberry and chocolate finishing with currant and smoke with medium tannins. This lovely Merlot had 16 months in French Oak and scored 92 points in Wine Spectator !

This was one of the best Merlots we had in a long while and still have a bottle in our cellar. Mia Klein is very personable and has a committed passion for what she does and it shows in the quality of the wine that she makes. We will be looking forward to what Mia has to offer us in the future.
