Moonshine, that lovely tasty tradition in the south has been highly sought after for generations, legal or not. Fortunately, for those who like to indulge in indigenous libations, Ole Smoky Moonshine is available to all of us and it’s even legal! As founder Joe Baker states, ““We have an incredibly rich history with making liquor. It’s an important part of who we are.”

This southern treat is Appalachian born and bred. Generations of Ole Smoky families were among the first to step foot in the Smoky Mountains. They have honed the art of whiskey making in order to survive during tough economic times and are reaping the benefits as interest in whiskey has been on the up rise.

When Tennessee state law changed to allow the distillation of spirits, these moonshiners saw an opportunity to showcase their excellent mountain-made moonshine. Ole Smoky is the first federally licensed distillery in the history of East Tennessee. Just like other moonshiners and bootleggers, they keep many stories to themselves as it’s considered risky to tell stories of moonshine glory. The consequences of talking back in the day and even today makes it something you just don’t do.

We just had to indulge and were impressed. Our Moonshine of choice was OLE SMOKY BLACKBERRY MOONSHINE. It was a true joy in a mason jar with aromas and flavors of freshly picked wild blackberries from the hillside of the Appalachians, of course with a kick. This Blackberry delight is perfect for sipping at a backyard barbeque or on the front porch. No matter where you choose to raise your mason jar, you will not be disappointed.

Speaking about raising a mason jar, why not visit the Ole Smoky Distillery. From the moment you approach the entrance, the distinct smell of cooking and fermenting grains takes over your senses. See an authentic-working moonshine still and take in the entire process from beginning to end.
